How To Buy A New Computer in 2010

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

This article will provide you some advice on what choices you may wish to consider when buying a new computer in 2010.

What Should I Buy – Desktop, Laptop, Netbook

With the relentless advancement of Moore’s Law pushing performance up and prices down on processors and memory, computer systems are poised for explosive growth with the prices getting down to the point that there is little excuse to not buy a computer now. A full featured home or business desktop system can be had for under $400 with a good laptop being available for less than $1,000. So the question is how do you choose?

Choosing the type of system really comes down to what level of price and convenience you need. Desktop systems are less expensive so you can get more bang for your buck. Laptop systems have gotten to the point that they are good desktop replacements and can be found in screen sizes up to 20 inches. For the ultimate convenience there are the netbooks. The concept of a netbook is a travel companion that lets you browse the web, take notes, maybe shoot video, with long battery life and the ultimate in convenience.

What Are The Choices To Buying A Computer?

The primary choices you have to make are Operating System, CPU, Memory, Network, Hard Drive, and Monitor. You should also consider how you will maintain the system. The choices below are from the perspective of a desktop system but generally hold true for a laptop or netbook as well. I will highlight it where required for the different platforms.

Buying A Computer – Operating System

Today the primary decision is between getting a Windows system or something by Apple. Staying away from the religious fervor of the discussion, both are pretty easy to use, both will get you on the internet, and both are available pretty much everywhere. Internet access is the key. Windows systems are far more popular to buy since they can be found in a wide range of stores and also cost less. Absent a good friend who is an Apple user or a specific need like you are a professional graphic designer, get yourself a Windows system.

Right now for Windows systems buying a new computer you are going to be faced with getting the last version of Windows XP which was a fine operating system but at the end of its lifecycle, getting a Windows Vista system, or moving to Windows 7. I’ve supported all of them and would generally suggest that you skip Vista and XP and just move to Windows 7. Microsoft has done a good job with Windows 7 and there will be little if any development or fixes on the older systems. Windows 7 is the future for the application developers.

Buying A Computer – Processors

There was a time when the processor speed of your CPU was important, perhaps the most important buying factor of the purchase. That is no longer the case. With entry level machines starting above 2.0 Ghz and multi-processor multi-core systems readily available to everyone from major vendors, processors are not the most important factor but you should consider one thing when you buy your computer when selecting a processor.

How long will it be before you buy another processor? If it is more than 3 years then get the best processor you can afford. It should not be more than $200 for the upgrade to the best one available through a major vendor like HP or Dell for a desktop system. If you are like me and upgrade more frequently, I upgrade every 2 years, then the processor is less important. Upgrade it or not.

Buying a Computer – Memory

The dirty little secret of both Windows Vista and Windows 7 is that they will use more memory if it is available and your system performance will improve significantly because of it. With memory prices as low as they are today I would strongly recommend that you get the most memory that you can afford to put in the machine. It will have the strongest impact on system performance of all your choices. Don’t get hung up on the different types of memory available unless you are a computer hobbyist who wants the latest and greatest. Its not particular important for anyone other than a hobbyist or specialist.

Buying A Computer – Networking

With the advent of wireless networking several years ago, computer use started to explode. No longer did you have to pull cumbersome cables to and fro through your home or office. Setup a wireless access point connected to the internet, configure your networking on your computer and BAMM you are done. Anyone buying a desktop system today is likely to have an onboard networking connection for a LAN that you can plug your network cable into. Usually you can get an upgrade from the manufacturer to the latest wireless standard, 802.11n, for about $50. I’d recommend you take the upgrade if you have a desktop system. It is super convenient to have it available. If you are on a laptop or netbook then it is critically important that you take it and well worth the money.

Buying A Computer – Hard Drive

With the release of 1TB drives for dirt cheap prices you would think that hard drive choices are a thing of the past. Not so fast. If you plan on burning DVDs and storing music on your computer make sure you get atleast 300GB or more of hard drive storage which is about the minimum a vendor is going to offer you anyway. More is better depending on your needs.

Buying A Computer – Monitor

People work better with bigger monitors and they enjoy them more as well. Wide-screen monitors are available up to 30 inches or more. From a price perspective they can be found up to about 24 inches for a reasonable price. Consider that upgrade. It is almost always bought separately from the computer and will cost you $200 or so for the nice ones. If you want to splurg on one thing for your computer consider upgrading to dual monitors. It is a very nice thing to have.

Buying A Computer – Service Plan

The last option to consider when buying a computer is what will you do when it breaks. Most vendors will offer you a very short manufacturer’s warranty of defects, often as short as 3 months. One of the nice things that you can do now is get hardware support and helpdesk support from the same managed service provider. Companies like MadRiverSystems.com can be your one stop shop for a flat rate fee. It would be nice to have someone on call to help you with your questions about using your computer when you are having trouble with a printer or doing something in MS Office in the evening. Well now that level of service is available. We strongly recommend it.

Buying A Computer – In Closing

I didn’t discuss anything about keyboard, mice, tablets, speakers, and other accessories. Get what you like. I like wireless mice and keyboards, but am not militant about it. Its just convenient.  It’s an incidental cost to the full system anyway if you are not a hobbyist or specialist. Get what you like.

Repair your computer can be very difficult if not knowledgeable about computers. Solving a problem for computers is you can not do without knowing what you do. The team consists of two parts – hardware and software. The material is so outside and Interior (CD-ROM, NIC (network interface card), memory, processor, CMOS battery, power supply, hard drive, sound card, video card, and of course motherboard.

If the computer does not work, you should be able to tell if the computer does not light or may be in competition but the operating system unbootable. The problem of the position could mean that the power of your team is bad, and if the computer do not start your operating system, can mean two things. If the drive system is good or operating your computer is damaged.

The operating system is, in fact, all the programs (applications) running on your computer software. The computer do not start the operating system is a very serious problem, and one person to understand the problem must repair the equipment. You can bring your computer to store computer repair. A repair shop computer to diagnose the problem with relative ease and keep you informed of what they can do to correct the problem.

But I must say that if you restore your computer disks provided with all computers for years, then you can repair the system OS itself. Simply insert your restore disk in the drive CD-ROM, turn the computer off and on. The computer is switched with the drive current restoration. All you need do is follow the instructions the computer screen and the computer will reinstall the operating system you.

If you do not have the equipment to restore a disk, then the probability of repair your operating system is very low. Definitely seek the help of a PC of high technology to work. More technology will probably repair the operating system using an OEM system disk OS. This means that the team will have its new OS, but it lacks all the programs that came with your computer when it was purchased. Why To Restore disc so important because it has all the software for your team, not just the operating system.

So next time you need equipment repaired If memory does not start in the operating system, chances are that your operating system is damaged. If this happens and you have restore disks, follow the steps I took in the second paragraph above and that should solve the problem. Now if this is an issue turning, then take to a computer shop. Indeed, for any hardware problem, you should contact a repair shop computer. They have the knowledge and skills necessary to maintain his team like a clock.

5 Tips To Hire Computer Consultants

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

At some point a business owner is going to need to consider hiring a consultant for some technology support. At that point knowing what to ask and how to hire a computer consultant becomes an indespensable skill. There are many different types of experts within the umbrella of ‘computer consultant’ and they are not always knowledgeable about the services you are looking for despite what they may say. Here are 5 tips to help you get to the type of consultant engagement you are looking for.

Hire Computer Consultant – Location, Location, Location

If you decide that where they are physically located is important or need someone to make house calls, then ignore the national consultant companies and focus on those in your local area. The reason you should ignore the national companies is they are likely to outsource the support to a local company anyway and you will just pay more for the same service. Many consultants work out of home offices or storefronts and will accept systems there for repair. Many will come to you, making house calls or fixing systems at your home or business. The best place to find this type of consultant is at your local Chamber of Commerce although in a pinch you can ask other business owners in your area who they use. Computer Consultants who join the Chamber are in the business to make long term business relationships and are much more likely to have the skill set and support mindset that you will want as your business partner for technology support.

Hire Computer Consultant – Shop Prices

Like many things getting three bids is a good start to engaging any services from a consultant or contractor. Be cautious of prices that are very low. You get what you pay for. Hiring the lowest bidder may indicate they have little or no experience or are out of touch with the current technology. It could also mean they are much better at their job and are confident that they can get things fixed quickly. in Connecticut most small business computer support is billed at under $200/hr with $100 being more typical. Youwill also find the big box retail technology services at consumer electronics stores to be on the high end with little experience outside of what they sell directly. The flip side of that is if they sell that specific model they can do a good job fixing it. Depending on your situation you may prefer a generalist which is what you will get a local computer shop.

Hire Computer Consultant – Industry Experience

What commonly happens in the computer service industry is consultant companies target a particular market or industry vertical. Some like MadRiverSystems.com are focused on managed service solutions and system troubleshooting and service restoration. Others focus strictly on accounting systems. Others on the medical industry. The list goes on. If you need someone with specific industry knowledge then make sure that is on your list of questions that you ask. When they answer make sure to ask a few probing questions just to confirm they have done the work you think important.

Hire Computer Consultants – Service Delivery

If you need someone for general desktop support and repair then look for someone who specializes in that. If you need a data warehouse deployed make sure your are looking for that specific skill set. If you need someone to be able to explain what they did to fix a problem to non-technical people, make sure they can articulate difficult solutions appropriately.

Hire Computer Consultants – References

Anyone who has done technology support for more than 5 years or so will have technical references they can offer you if you ask for them. For those not technically inclined checking a reference is a good way to go. For a consultant their technical references are their resume.

The 4 Step Computer Repair Service Pyramid

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

Having worked in many different technical environments I’ve come to realize that there are four major flavors of how computer support is typically done which depends on where the computer is. Residential, SOHO or small business, medium size business, and large business (enterprise.)

Residential Computer Repair

A residential computer owner with one or two computers will typically not do computer maintenance. Like a car with no oil change, things go badly at some point. It’s inevitable. They end up losing data they need, often work information, the family is yelling, and while they can get the computer repaired somewhere, it costs more than it should with some basic low cost maintenance and they never get back to the state they were before the failure, loosing data permanently.

Small Business Computer Repair

A small business computer owner with less than 25 computers will typically buy a support contract from them hardware supplier and will have some business contacts who also do computer support they met through the Chamber of Commerce. They will often not have a written plan on what to do if they lost an important computer system or service, nor will they have a process to fix it, so they will muddle through it when it fails. Their business contacts for technical suppor will come through eventually but since it is an adhoc support service, the small business owner will not be a priority to help over the customers that have normal support contracts. A small business computer owner will usually but not always have anti-virus software, will usually not run Windows Update or apply systems patches. They will usually backup some data, but not enough to get themselves all the way back to 100% functionality quickly.

Medium Business Computer Repair

A medium size business with less than 500 computers will typically buy hardware support contracts and will have a small team of technical support professionals doing reactive troubleshooting and system restoration as well as technical project work. They will probably do some preventive computer maintenance on mission critical systems, but not on all their systems or desktops. They will probably have some web services hosted through a third party data center for maximum service uptime.

Enterprise Business Computer Repair

A large business will often have thousands of computers and large teams of professional technology support. They will have master service agreements from the largest OEM technology companies. They will have systems deployed that do constant maintenance on their primary systems and will have locked down their non critical systems to the point that it is difficult to damage them by accident. They will have a plethora of business and technical monitoring systems to tell them everything is ok. They will normally have hardware data centers in various places. They will almost certainly have a master Disaster Recovery Plan that documents their most important business systems and processes and how to recover them in time of a failure.

Computer Maintenance – What Works

The reason large businesses spend oddles of money tuning, fixing, and monitoring their systems is money. They know through bitter experience and internal case studies that any downtime costs them more money than no downtime. So they work to minimize it as much as possible through a series of easy to implement technical steps which ironically can be done by the smallest business as well.

Computer Maintenance – Disaster Recovery Plan

You don’t need to own a Wall Street brokerage to do this one. A disaster recovery plan is among the easiest things for a small business computer owner to accomplish and requires minimal technical knowledge. It consists of identifying the business process steps you need to stay in business, take in money, send out product, etc. When you know what those processes are, you then can find the technical systems that you depend on as part of them and figure out what you would need to restore them if you lost those technical systems. The hard part in that is the business processes, getting them all on paper and it can easily be done by company officer in concert with someone from sales, purchasing, accounting, etc. Once you document the process you can bring in a technical specialist to help you document what that means from a technology perspective. Often the solution is just knowing where the important data is kept and how you can back it up without risking it.

Ironically its even easier for a home computer owner since your needs are typically less complex. Your family will typically have a few common sets of information they need. Family photos, documents, video, music, etc. Figure out what it is one weekend then make sure it gets backed up. You could have a small NAS at your house which is what we do, or maybe you use an offsite backup service. Either way works fine.

Computer Maintenance – Anti-Virus & Malware Prevention Software

Experiencing a virus on your computer system is devestating. Often they thrash through all your files, your privacy gets compromised, and quite often your machine gets hijacked to do some other task. Bot nets are real, they can be dangerous for your system, and they are easy to prevent. Anti virus software gets you part of the way there.

Virus prevention software is cheap, often less than $30 a year. You can either install it manually yourself or even use an anti virus managed service from a provider like Mad River Systems. For a nominal monthly cost we install anti virus software on a client system remotely and manage it for them remotely. Regardless of how you choose to do it this is a must have step now. Don’t skimp on it. Protect every system you have with anti virus software.

Computer Maintenance – Windows Updates

After 10 years of being hammered by everyone Microsoft has gotten pretty good at the automation and deployment of system updates. Keeping your computers current is among the most effective ways to protect yourself from downtime. In corporate environments I have seen enterprises go offline by one virus infection and the only computers that continued to run were the ones that were patched. Word to the wise, take care of this. Your two basic options are too configure it to run automatically at a particular time every day or night on every machine or to use a managed service provider like Mad River Systems to do it for you remotely. Much like the anti virus solution, for a nominal fee we can manage this for you so it does not disrupt your business without having to come into your business.

Computer Maintenance – System Tuneups

Lets face it from time to time you have to bring your car into the dealer or the shop to check things out evern if nothing is broken. They take care of small maintenance problems before they turn into big problems, and generally let you know if there is anything wrong or about to go wrong. Computers are no different.

There are numerous indicators on a computer system on how it is performing. Honestly checking them manually can be a chore. But it is possible to do by yourself. If not you can opt for a managed service provider like Mad River Systems who can do it for you remotely.

Computer Troubleshooting Services

How To Purchase It

If you are reading this you probably own a computer. It may be big, it may be small. It might be super fast or …not. The point is you have a computer. Generally you will fix problems on your computer yourself when you recognize them, but every once in awhile you will get tossed a doozy. When that happens you need to find some help with the job. At that point you may consider using a local computer store to help you. This article is here to offer you tips on how to best to get computer troubleshooting services for your systems both as the owner of a small computer repair business who has fixed a fair amount of business and residential computer systems.

Computer Troubleshooting Service

Where To Take It

When shopping around for a computer troubleshooting service there are 3 basic places you can take a computer to get fixed. The first is a big box retailer that sells consumer electronics will often have a team of service techs to work on computers. The second is a national computer troubleshooting service. The third is a local computer shop

Computer Troubleshooting Service – Big Box Retailer Service

The big box retailer services are all fairly expensive and in general their staff  will lack in depth experience in technology repair that you would find in a computer shop or with a national computer troubleshooting service. They also tend to be fairly expensive, equivalent to a national computer troubleshooting service and they don’t have a lot of wiggle room on pricing or services. The plus side of using them is that if you bought the system from them they can probably fix it. Selling a few hundred desktop systems of the same model is going to yield support calls. They will have enough institutional knowledge to fix what they sell.

Computer Troubleshooting Service – National Computer Troubleshooting Services

There are several national computer troubleshooting services. Much like the retailers, they are fairly expensive. What they don’t tell you is they normally sub-contract out a large portion of their work. I know this because I am one of the sub-contractors. You are generally going to get someone who has solid computer technical repair skills and will pay for the priveledge since you are paying them, the sub-contractor, and ‘the house’ that puts the two together. You are not going to have any wiggle room on price, nor will you necessarily get your computer problem fixed but you will get fixed what you asked to be fixed.

Computer Troubleshooting Service – Computer Shop

Most towns and cities regardless of size will have a computer shop or two run by someone with solid technical skills. They will usually cost a bit less than a national computer troubleshooting service or a big box retailer and will be familiar with a far larger scope of equipment than you will ever find in a retailer’s shop. Many will have careers spent in large enterprises doing technical support after which they have their business going on serving the local community. This offers them a breadth of knowledge, experience, and practical skills in fixing problems. Their only downside is they usually are hard to find. A good place to start is on the internet using the search terms ‘computer repair town_name”. So if you lived in Southington, CT you would search on ‘computer troubleshooting southington‘ and you would get returned a list of computer repair companies as well as the business directory listings.

Computer Troubleshooting Service

Know Why You Need It

Computer repair services will normally charge you by the hour to repair your system and they will fix what you tell them to fix. So make sure when you walk in that you know what you need them to fix or it may get expensive for you. You might find a computer shop that offers you a flat rate price to fix technology. In our case we give our customers a choice. You can pay us hourly or a flat fee which changes based on the job scope.

One of the interesting things about doing computer support is the problem is rarely as simple as the owner seems to think it is. Sometimes their computer has an STD (virus), other times it needs a tuneup, while other times there is a hardware or software problem. Usually it seems to be at least 2 or 3 from that list.

When you are getting ready to bring your computer somewhere to be fixed take the time to write down what you think is going wrong with it as well as any screen shots. It will ultimately get your problem solved faster and will reduce your costs. And while you are at it if you think you were doing something weird, tell them.

A computer service professional is going to know about 10 minutes after turning your system on if you have been downloading torrents from The Pirate Bay, using trial software, etc. They usually are not going to care much about that. It’s your system and they are not the thought police. But if the symptoms your system are experiencing started right after that, they need to know.
