Computer Troubleshooting Services

How To Purchase It

If you are reading this you probably own a computer. It may be big, it may be small. It might be super fast or …not. The point is you have a computer. Generally you will fix problems on your computer yourself when you recognize them, but every once in awhile you will get tossed a doozy. When that happens you need to find some help with the job. At that point you may consider using a local computer store to help you. This article is here to offer you tips on how to best to get computer troubleshooting services for your systems both as the owner of a small computer repair business who has fixed a fair amount of business and residential computer systems.

Computer Troubleshooting Service

Where To Take It

When shopping around for a computer troubleshooting service there are 3 basic places you can take a computer to get fixed. The first is a big box retailer that sells consumer electronics will often have a team of service techs to work on computers. The second is a national computer troubleshooting service. The third is a local computer shop

Computer Troubleshooting Service – Big Box Retailer Service

The big box retailer services are all fairly expensive and in general their staff  will lack in depth experience in technology repair that you would find in a computer shop or with a national computer troubleshooting service. They also tend to be fairly expensive, equivalent to a national computer troubleshooting service and they don’t have a lot of wiggle room on pricing or services. The plus side of using them is that if you bought the system from them they can probably fix it. Selling a few hundred desktop systems of the same model is going to yield support calls. They will have enough institutional knowledge to fix what they sell.

Computer Troubleshooting Service – National Computer Troubleshooting Services

There are several national computer troubleshooting services. Much like the retailers, they are fairly expensive. What they don’t tell you is they normally sub-contract out a large portion of their work. I know this because I am one of the sub-contractors. You are generally going to get someone who has solid computer technical repair skills and will pay for the priveledge since you are paying them, the sub-contractor, and ‘the house’ that puts the two together. You are not going to have any wiggle room on price, nor will you necessarily get your computer problem fixed but you will get fixed what you asked to be fixed.

Computer Troubleshooting Service – Computer Shop

Most towns and cities regardless of size will have a computer shop or two run by someone with solid technical skills. They will usually cost a bit less than a national computer troubleshooting service or a big box retailer and will be familiar with a far larger scope of equipment than you will ever find in a retailer’s shop. Many will have careers spent in large enterprises doing technical support after which they have their business going on serving the local community. This offers them a breadth of knowledge, experience, and practical skills in fixing problems. Their only downside is they usually are hard to find. A good place to start is on the internet using the search terms ‘computer repair town_name”. So if you lived in Southington, CT you would search on ‘computer troubleshooting southington‘ and you would get returned a list of computer repair companies as well as the business directory listings.

Know Why You Need It

Computer repair services will normally charge you by the hour to repair your system and they will fix what you tell them to fix. So make sure when you walk in that you know what you need them to fix or it may get expensive for you. You might find a computer shop that offers you a flat rate price to fix technology. In our case we give our customers a choice. You can pay us hourly or a flat fee which changes based on the job scope.

One of the interesting things about doing computer support is the problem is rarely as simple as the owner seems to think it is. Sometimes their computer has an STD (virus), other times it needs a tuneup, while other times there is a hardware or software problem. Usually it seems to be at least 2 or 3 from that list.

When you are getting ready to bring your computer somewhere to be fixed take the time to write down what you think is going wrong with it as well as any screen shots. It will ultimately get your problem solved faster and will reduce your costs. And while you are at it if you think you were doing something weird, tell them.

A computer service professional is going to know about 10 minutes after turning your system on if you have been downloading torrents from The Pirate Bay, using trial software, etc. They usually are not going to care much about that. It’s your system and they are not the thought police. But if the symptoms your system are experiencing started right after that, they need to know.
